Hinsdale
County - Above and Beyond
Hinsdale County is in the
heart of the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado and includes numerous
outdoor attractions as well as breathtaking scenery. The Town of Lake
City is the only incorporated town and the county seat. Some of the county’s
outstanding features include five 14,000 foot peaks in easy proximity
to Lake City, two scenic byways (the Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway and
the Silver Thread), one of the largest historic districts in the state,
4-wheeling, fishing, back country skiing, boating (Lake San Cristobal
is the 2nd largest natural body of water in Colorado) and much, much
more.

The county is 96% federally managed land (National
Forest or BLM) and boasts the lowest population density in the
state and the 15th lowest in the nation equaling less than one
person per square mile. The year round population is 790 persons,
with the majority living in Lake City or within a 15 mile radius.

| County. The town dates from the 1870’s
and was built as a support center for the area mines of the time.
The town hosts numerous festivals (Lake City Wine and Music Festival,
4th of July and Christmas in Lake City are just a few) and has
a busy arts community supporting local music, theatre and visual
arts exhibits. |
Other areas of interest include Cathedral, a ranching community and outdoor recreation
area in the northeast part of the county with backcountry access and excellent
fishing streams, the Rio Grande area with its summer homes, resorts, more excellent
fishing and access into the wilderness, and the Upper Piedra in the south end
of the county, another small ranching and seasonal home area with exceptional
outdoor recreational opportunities.
