Generous donations from community partners have helped All Points Transit purchase its first Volunteer Driver Program vehicle, a 2013 Toyota Prius. Region 10 Area Agency on Aging, the Montrose Community Foundation, Bright Mountain Foundation, and Turner Automotive all made contributions that made the vehicle purchase possible.
“With volunteer drivers and a fuel-efficient vehicle, All Points Transit will be able to perform low-cost trips outside of our regular Dial-A-Ride and public bus routes,” said Sarah Curtis, Mobility Manager for All Points Transit. “One of the goals of the program is to increase our capacity and availability to seniors, with the intention of reducing the current waiting list for door-to-door service.”
The volunteer program was initiated not only to serve All Points Transit’s passengers, but to meet other needs in the community that have been identified, as well. Over last winter and spring of this year, representatives from community organizations came together in a series of meetings to discuss gaps in transit and how a volunteer driver program might assist multiple organizations in the Montrose area. Participants included Montrose Coalition for the Homeless, Region 10, Welcome Home Montrose, Volunteers of America, the Center for Mental Health, and others. Since the purchase of the vehicle, Volunteers of America and Golden Circle Seniors have both made contributions to help with operating costs that include fuel, insurance and maintenance.
Now, All Points Transit is seeking volunteer drivers and additional funds to launch the program. The first five volunteers to join as a volunteer driver will receive free memberships to Time Bank of the Rockies. Those interested in joining the volunteer team should call Sarah at 970-249-6204 or stop by 431 South 2nd St. in Montrose.
Eva Veitch, Community Living Services Director at Region 10, helped spark the fundraising effort with some unexpected capital funds that became available at the end of Region 10’s fiscal year. When speaking of Region 10’s contribution to the program, Eva said. “We are pleased to play a small part in this great effort to meet the transportation needs in our community. Thank you, All Points Transit, for your efforts to drive it forward.”
