A new partnership to improve Medicare access has been formed on the Western Slope. Region 10 and the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) are teaming up to offer services and counseling for Medicare recipients living in the six-county service area of Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Ouray, and San Miguel Counties. SHIP counselors, who are volunteers with years of extensive training, will be housed at Region 10’s Enterprise Center, located at 300 N. Cascade Ave. in Montrose.

To celebrate this partnership, Region 10 and SHIP will be hosting an open house on May 6th from noon to 1 pm. Light food and beverages will be provided. Service providers in the area are encouraged to attend to learn more about SHIP and potentially network with counselors.

Before even settling into their new office, SHIP counselors have already been busy leading introductory seminars entitled “Medicare and You.” With presentations in Delta and Montrose already conducted, SHIP counselors are diligently working to help people navigate the complexities of Medicare.

Often times, individual experiences with Medicare demand individual attention. Questions about Part D prescription plans or claims appeals require one-on-one attention and confidentiality. This is exactly why SHIP counselors have already started to schedule days in various communities for individual counseling sessions. Currently, SHIP counselors will be available at the Delta Library on May 4th, May 18th, June 8th, June 22nd, July 6th, and July 20th. They will also be available in Hotchkiss on May 15th, June 19th, and July 17th. To schedule an appointment, please call 970.249.2436 ext. 218.

SHIP plans on scheduling more of these sessions throughout the Region 10 service area in the future. Please refer to Region 10’s online calendar (www.region10.net/calendar) for future events.
